The Mandarin Tree is a bright, welcoming art and concept store in Gordonton.
Run by artist, Claudia Aalderink, it’s chock full of colourful and often quirky New Zealand art. And if you want to make a day of it, there’s a ton to do around Gordonton!
Here’s a couple more excuses you can make to drop by.
My Spotlight dancers on display
I popped out to catch up with Claudia and drop off my Spotlight prints.
She took one look at my ballerina leaping and said, “Oh, that brings back memories!” Turns out she’s an ex-dancer herself – until a bike accident and a cast all the way up her leg ended her dance career. 🙁
These days she uses her creative energy on her art, which brings me to the second reason to visit…
Echo exhibition at The Mandarin Tree
Claudia uses recycled beehives to create her intricate artworks. They actually remind me of the geometric, honeycomb-like patterns in the Alhambra. They manage to be colourful, rustic, contemporary, and homey all at the same time, and you just want reach out and touch them to see how they feel…
I’m less familiar with Santie’s art (which is why I have their opening on Sunday the 10th March, 2 pm in my calendar!) The words that spring to mind when I look at her Facebook page are playful, whimsical, and bright. I’m looking forward to seeing more!
Where: The Mandarin Tree, 1034 Gordonton Road, Gordonton
When: Open Tuesday to Friday 10 am – 5 pm and Saturday 10 am – 2 pm
Echo exhibition runs from the 10th of March to the 23rd of March.
Keep on shining bright,
